Speaking in tongues-

Having a Right Motive and Understanding- A Contextual Study on 1st Corinthians 14 as it relates to the church.

f677603e-5f54-4c04-8922-9da24bb4ffb2-1‘…It is important that everyone have access to the knowledge and love of God in the language everyone understands, than that you go off and cultivate God’s presence in a mysterious prayer language…- 1st Corinthians 14:5 (Msg)

When the Holy Spirit fell upon the Apostles, they began to speak in tongues (in a number of different languages) and the people (Parthians, Medes, Elamites; visitors from Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene; immigrants from Rome, both Jews and proselytes; Cretans and Arabs) understood them according to his/her tribe (Acts 2:1-11 Msg).

Speaking in tongues is a sign for unbelievers (1st Corinthians 14:22 Msg). I would like to believe that when the disciples spoke, Jewish people were around also (yes they were) – if they spoke in other tongues, how is it that even their people understood? What if they wouldn’t have understood?

The only time speaking in tongues to the public (Church) is significant, is when there is an interpreter as the Holy Spirit did in the time of the Apostles. This is because if you speak in a way no one understands, what’s the point of opening your mouth’? (1st Corinthians 14:9 Msg)

‘He who speaks in tongues edifies himself… unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified’- (1st Corinthians 14:4-5 Niv).

Don’t get me wrong- Speaking in tongues is a beautiful experience God has allowed us share with Him and even Apostle Paul who wrote to the Corinthians affirmed to the wonderful intimacy it provides us with God (1st Corinthians 14:18 Msg). However, my point is this; ‘since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church- (1st Corinthians 14:12 Niv)

THE ABUSE-

Isn’t it funny how people think ‘speaking in tongues’ and ‘saying things you don’t understand’ are synonymous?- Sst

And so they open their mouths in church to speak ten thousand words that sound like gibberish, rather than speak five that everyone will understand’-1st Corinthians 14:19 Msg (paraphrased).

The value and beauty of speaking in tongues has been nullified to a very large extend by people who have adapted the world system of ‘wanting to feel among’ and unfortunately the church isn’t doing much about it; some new ministries even promote this directly or indirectly. What are you as a pastor or child of God doing about this?

In those days, people believed the size of your bible is the size of your anointing and so you see pastors and ‘strong men of God’ with huge bibles. People with little bibles on the other hand were always looked down upon; and so everyone wanted a big bible, just so, they too can feel among. Do you remember those days?

Don’t get me wrong- MOTIVE… motive is the foundation of everything penned down today, so unless you are guilty, don’t feel the guilt!

People these days go to the extent of learning and memorizing how to speak in tongues, word for word from what they heard from their Pastors/Ministers. This is partly because churches (new generational churches) sometimes make members feel ‘incomplete’ if they cannot speak in tongues.

Oh! You don’t have the Holy Spirit in you-

I remember a true life story a friend once shared with me. After a program that was organized and facilitated by ‘ministers of God’, one of the facilitators (a Nigerian) was asked why he didn’t speak in tongues- they wondered- didn’t he have the Holy Spirit? After much defensive arguing, the other facilitators began to pray for him to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit whose evidence was in the speaking of tongues; when this man noticed they weren’t going to give up, he started speaking his local dialect (unknown to them). On hearing him speak in a different language, they began to praise God for they had given him the spirit of tongues.

  • What God does not give you, man cannot!
  • Isn’t it funny how people think ‘speaking in tongues’ and ‘saying things you don’t understand’ are synonymous?- Sst
  • Hypocrisy and mediocrity become your bedspread when you don’t allow God to use you, but use yourself for God- Sst
  • Only God can give you a discerning spirit. This is missed when your will is not in line with God’s will- Sst

THE IDEAL-

26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.

29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.’-1st Corinthians 14:26-33 Niv

‘If you won’t play by these rules, God cannot use you’- 1st Corinthians 14:37-38 Msg

‘Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way’. – 1st Corinthians 14 39-40

‘Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed–not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence–continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling’.- Philippians 2:12

Speaking in tongues is not an immunity to sin, neither is it a proof of a higher calling of purity. Walk your faith with the grace of God to His glory, not to the pleasing of the population of your congregation. Desire and accept the Holy Spirit. Never do His work with his walk in your life.

Remember the disciples spoke in tongues as the Spirit prompted/enabled them and not as they prompted or enabled the Spirit- Acts 2:4

A Clear Motive-

SST

It’s not the external,

Stop judging from the exterior.

Whether you look good,

Or act as a saint on the outside,

It doesn’t change the inside,

What really matters; the internal.

The most important, the interior-

You see, the motive cannot be seen,

The appearances are very clear though!

Don’t be deceived by your right –choice-ness,

When there really is no righteousness…

You are not different; the real one,

Whether in public or privately.

God is not impressed by those that put up shows;

Holy outside, but full of internal poison

Condemning and saying it must be like this,

The way they understand it to be…

Honestly, what really matters is the attitude of the heart

Might not be perfect-

But God respects the inward understanding.

It’s not about feeling among,

It’s about knowing…

…knowing just enough to give Him the glory

Have a heart of love,

With a clear motive-

Let go, the pride…

Because;

While a good inside is reflected on the outside

A good outside is not necessarily a reflection of the inside.

Love God,

Certainly with a clear motive-

God bless

God and Man-the Thirst

SST

This is dedicated to my Special; it’s how the peace came back… I love you…

(Man…

Lord, my peace…

Word on the cross

 (God…

I am thirsty…

I am thirsty for righteousness

I am thirsty for the true worshippers; those of Spirit origin

I am thirsty for life; the actual one I gave you

I am thirsty

I am thirty for those that will walk with me

I am thirsty for those whose work for me is actually led by me

I am thirsty for you

Ironically, it’s my water in you that will quench this thirst

But you have to want it

I am thirsty…

It’s the reason I died; remember,

To be complete, actually it is ,so you don’t die

You see, am thirsty for that sinner

For this reason I came

(Man…

I am thirsty for your peace Lord Jesus

‘Am the whore whose sin is so big even sinners are hating-

Oh! I’m that killer Lord, everyone is saying “but how did he end up like this?”

‘Am the one marked sinner; however big or small

Lord, I’m thirsty for your presence; the world has failed me

Like Solomon in scriptures, everything is now vanity

Lord I’m thirsty because I used to think

Lord I’m thirsty because I now know

Lord I’m thirsty…

‘Am that lukewarm Christian;  I’ve been in the church for ages

Yet spot-full I have become

Lord I’m thirsty cause I want to be your bride when you return

I always thought I was a Christian

Never knew my actions were just me acting

Oh Lord! How sweet my mouth and ears were in serving you

While my lifestyle, motive and nature was affirming…

(God…

“I never knew you; you worker of iniquity”

(Man cont…

Lord I’m really this time thirsty, to be like you

Your original intent from the very beginning

Correcting and not condemning people

Praying and not preying people

(Thirst…

John 4:14

“But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

John 14:6

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Rev 3:20

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”

(Man…

I am thirsty for your humility

Your forgiveness

Your salvation

For your love

Your relationship-

ME TOO, I’m thirsty for YOU, Lord Jesus!

These are not words written in the speech realm, but those written as a form of action, a Christian is not necessarily that person you are looking at, THE CHRISTIAN IS THE PERSON THAT IS IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS (it could  be that person though, but the point is, it could also be you). I invite you into an intimate ultimate eternal love affair founded by a religion of a relationship with the living water that satisfies all….

John 7:37-38

“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

The New Year’s Prayer…

Strictly simple from Tosin (SST)

new_year_resolution

It’s not just a New Year’s wish,

New resolutions like the former…

It’s different this time,

As was intended…

Going back to the original,

Tapping into the Master’s plan…

I remember now, so clearly,

I was called to have dominion,

From the very first command!

Not to dominate His image,

Or subdue His essence,

Not to fight or shush the Master’s will,

As is usual…

But to let His will be done

The rare but very actual-

If I might,

This and only this I ask

That I grow into you, so much

I become the exact representation of you

Your image; the initial intent…

As each day starts a new year,

Signifying a fresh start,

2013, Oh Lord!!!

I give absolutely to you…

To order and direct my step,

To teach me in the path to go

Leading and introducing me to your presence…

As the old year has once again rolled out, I sure hope you all have just like me, check-listed the events that have constructively destroyed and sharpened you into who you now are; in this year, 2013. I want you to understand that though a lot of mistakes might have happened during the past year, there isn’t a single one without whose significance is to be ignored. Like me, I am also aware that quite a number of blessings followed that year, however, the way it affected you is also something not to be ignored. If there is anything I have learnt, it’s the statement well expressed by John Wooden, when he said “you can’t let praise or criticism get to you. Its weakness to get caught up in either one”…

My greatest desire and prayer as we’ve entered into the New Year is that, we come into the understanding of the importance of; the little events that sharpen our everyday lives, the motives that detect the reaction we present and the knowledge of the assurance we do have in the Ultimate…

I therefore charge you not to rush into making the usual resolutions that turn “normal” once the day changes from New Year to the second day of the New Year but rather, to keep a focus on Him and the principles He has put in place for you to WALK INTO IN THE YEAR 2013!!!

“Our motive for writing is simply this: We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy! This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there’s not a trace of darkness in him.  If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we’re obviously lying through our teeth — we’re not living what we claim.  But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God’s Son, purges all our sin.”
